“Let's just stay down here on the field until the Mom and Pop Parade is over, Pierce.” We'd all arrived at the football field and the children, save Jamie and Sarah, had scattered to sit with their friends. Mom climbed the concrete stairs with my two young 'uns and found a bleacher bench for the rest of us. She busied herself fixing the loosening ponytail in Sarah's thick but extremely fine hair.

“My thoughts exactly, sweetheart.” He found a random lawn chair (probably the coach's) and I sat in it with gratitude. Other parents of the football boys gathered around us, preparing for the traditional.. embarrassment. I mean, I don't enjoy parading out in front of everyone--even if I'm not covered in bruises and scars. However, I am extremely proud of Matt...

Pierce was helping me to my feet and Matt's arm went around my shoulders. Ah, the parent parade had begun and I hadn't even noticed. The pain killers made me so out of it.

Pierce moved to the sidelines. Matt and I moved forward a step or two then Matt abruptly stopped and motioned to the sidelines. Pierce, elegantly lounging against the wall of the bleachers, long jean-clad legs crossed at the ankles, and arms folded across his chest, pointed to himself and mouthed, “Me?” Matt nodded his head and Pierce walked out to join us as we proceeded to the “line-up.” Matt shook Pierce's hand when we stopped. A surprised assistant coach handed flowers to me and a fleece blanket to Pierce.

Well, that was kind of public. I guess Matt didn’t want to beat the crap out of Pierce anymore. While we walked back up to our seats, I asked Pierce, “Did you know he was going to do that?”

“Not a clue.”

“I am so sorry. I hope you're not embarrassed.”

People in the stands were calling congratulations to us as we climbed the stadium stairs. About halfway up, applause broke out. I didn’t know how to react.

“You’re blushing, Tracy. Why are you so embarrassed?”

“Doesn’t this bother you? You know what everyone is thinking.”

“I’ll have a ring for you tomorrow. I’ll marry you tonight, if you like. We can be in Vegas before midnight.” His voice, whispering in my ear, was full of humor.

We had reached Mom and our seats. All around us, as we sat down, people were reaching to shake Pierce’s hand. They were smiling at me. They were congratulating Mom. Everyone seemed thrilled. I felt like I was having an out of body experience (how many pain pills had I taken?). I’m sure Matt had no idea what he’d just done.

Pierce looked at me. “Are you feeling all right? You look a little pale.” He pushed an errant lock of hair from my face.

“It’s probably just all the activity. I guess I’m not very strong yet.”

Sarah popped up in front of me. “Can I get a root beer, Mommy, can I?”

“Me, too. Me, too.” No, that wasn't my mom.
